The questions range from product specific questions to a basic understanding of how to calculate your pond volume. Which pumps are mainly used for filtration systems? OASE recommends using the Aquamax Eco Premium series for filtration systems. The 2000, 3000, and 4000 GPH pumps are solids handling up to 3/8 in and perfect for filtering debris. While choosing a pump also consider other contributing factors such as pond size, biological load, and any additional features you want in your water garden . For any questions, contact OASE customer service for any advice to choose the right type of pump.
How should a pump be installed? A pump should be installed lower than the filter intake. This ensures optimal circulation and oxygen enrichment.
How can the capacity of a pump be changed? You can mechanically change the capacity of most pumps with a regulator or flow control with the exception of the ProfiMax and ProfiNaut.
Can the capacity of the pump be changed with a dimmer? No. A speed control unit is required for adjusting motors. Lights, on the other hand, can be adjusted with a dimmer.
Does my pump have to be submersed or can I run it dry? The following can be inline: All Aquarius Universal EXCEPT the Aquarius 80, All Neptun Pumps, The Profinaut, The ProfiMax and All AquaMax Eco Classic and Premium Pumps can be run inline. Submerged or inline instructions vary from pump to pump and can be found in the manual.
Can watercourse and fountain attachments run with one pump? Yes. The AquaMax Eco Premium has this capability due to its two inlets, one with a suction inlet for an AquaSkim or satellite filter, and one to power another feature, you may install a Y distributor to direct flow from one pump to multiple outlets.
Can solar pumps run filtration systems? No. Solar pumps are not suitable for operating filtration systems because they do not have 24 hour operation.
What expenses will incur when using pumps? The costs depend on the power consumption of a pump. Power consumption is defined by Watts and is based on an hour. 1000 Watt = 1 Kilowatt (KW)
Can OASE pumps be used in a swimming pond? No. This is not permitted according to the CDE guidelines.
Are the pumps frost-proof? All Neptun pumps, the ProfiNaut, ProfiMax and the AquaMax Eco Premiums are frost resistant, the classics are not. We recommend removing the unit at temperatures below zero degrees centigrade for proper winterizing. Thoroughly clean and check the unit for damage. Store the unit immersed in water or filled with water in a frost-free place. Do not flood the power plug.
How do I connect a filter and skimmer to a AquaMax Eco Premium? A filter is connected on the pressure side. A skimmer is connected on the intake or suction side with a stepped hose adapter to one of the two pumps.
Can the pump cable be shortened or the plug dismantled? No. This changes the design of the pump and it will no longer satisfy the UL lines.
Can pumps also be operated with solar modules? No. This is an essential piece of solar pumps. These pumps are powered with direct 230 volt pumps.
Can I leave my pump in the water year round? Which are frost resistant? All Neptun, ProfiNaut, ProfiMax, and the AquaMax Eco Premiums pumps are frost resistant down to -4°F. For any other pumps we recommend removing the unit at temperatures below 32°F for proper winterizing. We recommend removing the unit at temperatures below zero degrees centigrade for proper winterizing. Thoroughly clean and check the unit for damage. Dry and store the unit immersed in water or filled with water in a frost-free place. Do not flood the power plug.
Can I regulate water flow? All but the ProfiMax and Profinaut have various flow control options. Can install ball valve on these pumps if water flow needs to be restricted.
Why isn’t my pump reaching the head height I need? There could be several different reasons for this. First make sure to check that the regulator is set at desired flow capacity. If you’re experiencing low flow, check to make sure there is no blockage in the tubing or any debris in the impeller assembly. Also consider that for every 10’ of tubing used there is 1’ of head loss. For any questions, contact OASE customer service for any advice to choose the right type of pump.
Why isn’t my pump working?
First check the electrical connection/ GFCI breaker
Make sure that there is no blockage or kinks in the tubing
Check that the impeller assembly is clear of any debris (any pump can be disassembled down to impeller except Neptuns and ProfiMax)*
Calcification can prevent the impeller from spinning, if there is calcification you can soak the impeller or entire pump in a solution of 50% CLR or Limeaway de-scaler and 50% water for 30 minutes; rinse and try again
If the AquaMax isn’t turning on, unplug, check for debris in impeller and reconnect. The pump runs through various speeds and detects whether it runs dry (is blocked) or is submerged. The pump switches off automatically after approx. 90 seconds if it runs dry (is blocked). The pump automatically makes new attempts to start up at regular intervals. In the event of a malfunction, disconnect the power supply and flood the pump or remove the obstacle. Following this, the unit can be restarted.

How should I clean my pump?
Prior to reaching into the water, disconnect the power supply to all units used in the water. Disconnect the power plug prior to carrying out work on the unit.
Remove all hoses from the unit.
Dismantle, Pull out the impeller and clean all parts with clear water and a soft brush (instructions vary from product to product, outlined in manual)
In the event of stubborn furring (calcium deposits), a solution of 50% CLR or Lime-A-Way de-scaler and 50% water can be used. Just soak impeller or pump in solution for 30 minutes and rinse. Subsequently, clean the pump thoroughly using clear water. Never use aggressive cleaning agents or chemical solutions. These could attack the housing surface or impair the function.
Filtration & UVC
Why does the Bitron C have to be at least 6 ft. away from the pond? Would a shorter distance harm our fish? The specified distance from the pond is based on a guideline dealing with safety measures for electrical devices near water. The manufacturer must instruct the consumer accordingly. Per UL guidelines the device cannot harm plants or fish.
After a filtration system has been installed, how long does it take for the filter bacteria to build up? It usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks until the filter bacteria have settle into your pond. We recommend only turning the Bitron on after that time.
Should a filtration system run 24 hours or can I attach a timer to turn it off at certain times? We highly suggest running your filtration system 24 hours. Pond water can get dirty after a few hours and the filter needs to be in constant operation to keep your water clear. Additionally, the bacteria and microorganisms in the filter foams, which are necessary for biological filtration, die off if the system is not in constant motion.
How do I remove debris from the glass tube in the Bitron UVC Clarifier? The Bitron 36/55/110 all come equipped with a self-cleaning automatic cleaning rotor that keeps the glass tube clean.
Is it possible to install the replacement bulb from the Bitron 36 in the Bitron 55-110? No! The Bitron 36 has a different bulb then the 55 & 110.
Are there formulas for calculating UV capacities relative to pond volume? And when should the UV bulb be replaced? It depends on the interplay of your filter pump, clarifier, and biological filter. Specialists are not of one opinion regarding dimensioning of UV devices. The UV bulb should be replaced annually to ensure that the UV wave works at full capacity.
How big should the filtration system be? What type of Filter?
The size or capacity of a filtration system depends on:

Which type of filtration system is required?
The type depends on:
Structure (technical) conditions
Self cleaning rotor
You can choose between flow-through filters (BioTec and BioSmart series) for larger ponds or pressure filters (FiltoClear series) for smaller ponds.
When should I use a gravity filter? A flow-through filter is great for large ponds with water of about 2,640 gallons. A flow-through filter is ideal for ponds that have a lot of wildlife.
When should I use a pressure filter? A pressure filter is primarily used for smaller ponds up to app. 2,640 gallons. Choose a pressure filter if water courses or bubbling stones will be operated after the filtration.
How does a filter work? An OASE filter works on biological-mechanical principles.This means that first the largest debris particles are filtered out mechanically by filter foams and then the biological filtration continues the process using beneficial bacteria.
Why should I use a Bitron UV Clarifier?
A Bitron C UV clarifier has the following advantages:
It flocculates suspended algae to be picked up by the filter
It breaks the algae down biologically
At the same time harmful bacteria are killed off

How often do I replace my UV bulb? Replace bulb annually, can purchased on our store site
How can I tell if my bulb is working? Check the indicator light on the unit to verify bulb is working, UV bulb will only produce light if properly installed and safety engaged (bulb seated within housing).
Is the filtration system frost-proof? When winter starts the system should be switched off, cleaned, broken down and stored in a frost-free location. It is suggested to not leave the tank in the ground because water can enter and expand when frozen.
How come the filter only fills half-way with water when in operation? This is normal. The water level increases later depending on the level of biological load and debris in the water. A new filter only fills about half-way.
How do I know when to clean my BioTec filter? The red float indicates that the filter needs to be cleaned. With increasing pollution of the filter foams the water level in the container rises, causing the red float to rise as well. The more debris in the water, the more the filter pads get caked with muck, causing low water flow through them. When the water fills up in the tank, it causes the float to rise.
Why can’t I bury the BioTec and BioSmart filters? This is due to reasons of design. Because it is a flow-through filter, the lid is not impermeable.
How often do filters need to be cleaned? There is no set time, this period can vary greatly depending on biological load, weather factors, and water content. Filters equipped with a cleaning indicator will alert you when it’s time.
How do I clean a filter? You can mechanically clean the filter foams with cleaning handles, backwash capabilities, or by hand depending on the filter. The lower filter area can also be cleaned as needed. The BioSmart filters have cleaning indicators which will alert you that it is time to clean. The FiltoClear and BioPress feature backwash for easy no mess cleaning. The BioTec and BioSmart have easy pull cleaning handles that compress the filter foams to mechanically clean. Replace filters every 18-24 months.
Where should a filter be setup? A filter should be set-up in the direct vicinity of the pond but location will differ from filter to filter. See manual for specific set up instructions.
Can multiple filters be combined? Yes. You can use multiple filters at once.
If I use water treatments, do I need a filter system? Yes. The products improve the water quality and have a supporting effect. However, they are no replacement for a filtration system. The products are effective for approximately 4 – 6 weeks.
Which factors do I need to consider when selecting the pond environment? First, try to choose a location where the pond will not be exposed to direct sunshine all day long, as this promotes excessive algae growth. The optimal location is half shaded and half sunny. We also recommend planting all around the pond. If there are fish in the water, the depth should be at least 2.5 ft. In the ratio of water surface to depth, an embankment angle of app. 30 degrees should be maintained. Give the embankment a terrace form, and provide stand areas for plant baskets. In addition ensure that leaves cannot fall directly into the pond.
Which pump is suitable for my pond? The selection of the right pump and the appropriate accessories depends on many factors. Your OASE dealer will work out the optimal solution for your individual needs together with you. The pond size is not the decisive factor for selecting the right pump. Rather: What should the pump be used for?
How are gallons calculated? L x W X H X 7.5 = Gallons of water
How high can a pond fountain feature be? In general: A fountain should not be higher than the radius of the pond.
From which point is the height differential calculated for a watercourse feature? The height differential for a watercourse is measured from the surface of the water to the top of the fountain.
How do I dispose of my UVC lamps correctly? Please drop off your lamps at the intended collection points. Disposal in domestic waste is not permitted.
What should I be aware of as far as child safety is concerned? This traffic safeguard obligation is violated if the property owner does not safeguard his garden pond in such a manner that children, particularly those children who are not from the area, can fall into the garden pond. A visible delimitation of the property is not considered sufficient – there must be a physical barrier, which keeps the children from entering the property unhindered. In general ensure that there is flat bank access if possible to prevent sudden falling in. The pond owner is obligated to initiate safety measures in a manner appropriate for him. Safeguard measures include wire mesh fencing like nets over the pond, as well as a steel grid mounted under the water surface.
There is a safety on all UVC units. The light won’t turn on unless it is correctly seated within the housing. This ensures you will not be exposed to the light.
What can I do to protect my fish from herons and animals? The so-called "Heron Shock" has proven itself in practical application. It involves connecting a fountain or water jet to a movement detector. Undesired visitors are quickly driven off. An additional possibility is stretching thin wire (such as gardening wire) around the pond. Can a waterfall be implemented in addition to the pond? Yes. A waterfall additionally enriches the water with oxygen.
How thick should a hose be? A hose should be at least 1" in diameter. The larger the hose diameter the better the water flow and circulation. Make sure to consult with OASE because the hose is influenced by the pump and connector size for each product.
How long should a hose be? Basically there is no direct limit on the length of a hose. However there is a relationship between hose length and friction loss. The hose diameter should be increased as the length of the hose increases. The hose diameter should be increased if there is a longer length of hose being used.
Which hoses/tubing are recommended? OASE recommends kink-free corrugate tubing, flexible PVC, or vinyl tubing. All of which can be found here.
How much water is required for a waterfall? You must consider the size of your pond, width of the spillway, and desired water height (The effect of waterfall you want between trickle, sheet, and cascade). 125 GPH is needed for every 1 inch of waterfall spillway. So if you have a 16 inch spillway or waterfall weir you need a minimum of 2000 GPH.
